अपने साथी छात्रों, या शिक्षकों, या अजनबियों द्वारा कभी-कभी स्कूल जाने के दौरान लड़कियों का यौन उत्पीड़न भी किया जाता है। यही दबाव पढ़ने वाले लड़कियों के कम नामांकन का कारण है और प्रतिधारण के लिए भी केंद्रीय हैं।
गरीबी भी अपनी भूमिका हमेशा निभाती है। अगर उनके कपड़े फटे हुए हैं, फिर भी गरीब से लड़कियां परिवार घर पर रहेंगे। ऐसे मामलों में उन्हें विनय और औचित्य की मांग के द्वारा मजबूर किया जाता सकता है।
